DNA Tests

 Back in 2024, I had the opportunity to get a free DNA test for Domi from Basepaws.  Technically, he's part of the "healthy cat cohort" of their Citizen Science program.

Cats are a "melting pot" and it's hard to pinpoint different breeds.  Not knowing anything about their parents, I wondered if there was anything in their background to worry about.

The breed info wasn't all that helpful, although it confirmed he has some Ragdoll genes.  What was reassuring was that he was clear of genetically-linked disease.

Midi didn't qualify for a free test, because she'd already been diagnosed with asthma.  (Thankfully, that's the only medical issue we're dealing with.)  They are so different in personality and appearance, I wondered how similar their DNA results would be.

I recently managed to find a good sale that coincided with some extra money, so I got Midi's report, too.

She, too, has a clean genetic bill of health.  Not sure if the dental difference is because she's 2 years older than he was when I got the test or not, but we'll keep an eye on it.

I love knowing more about the kids.

Domi & Midi are 4!

 Happy birthday to my 2 snuggle buddies!

We had a small party when I got home from work.  They had this month's medical themed Meowbox, and an assortment of tots and treats from Chewy.  Chewy even sent them a birthday card.

I think they're supposed to stick their head in the hole for a photo op, but no one cooperated.

The tuna and yam treats were a big hit; Midi even growled at her brother.

Hoping to spend the rest of the evening cuddling and/or watching them play.  So thankful these 2 furries claimed me.

Domi & Midi are 3!

 Hi, folks.  Sorry for the long post drought.  The kids & I are fine; I stay busy, the play & nap hard.  We're kind of boring.

Today (4/24) is Domi & Midu's 3rd birthday!  Chewy no longer carries the birthday box, so they got a random assortment of toys.

Tea bags (w/ catnip & silverine), loony loops, wool balls, a lightning bug mat, & a twitchy lizard.

The tea bags are currently the fan favorite, but they both had a good romp on the bed.

Domi & Midi are 2!

 The kitties are 2 today!

We had a kitty party at school. Domi hid the whole time, and Midi ended up joining him in their new tent in the corner.  I think they were both happy to go home.  They got treats, the tent, and some new toys in a goodie box from Chewy.

They're both still doing well; snuggly and playful and rotten.  Midi is still having asthma issues, but is otherwise healthy.   

I managed to get a free a DNA test for Dom around Christmas.  The results came in mod Feb, so I'll make a separate post about that later.  (The semester is wrapping up soon, so I should have some time.)

18 months!

 The kids (cats) tuned 18 months yesterday.  Tuesday's a late day for me (choir practice), so we're celebrating today with a good romp.

Both are in good health, and seem content.  Midi's asthma seems to have improved, although we're continuing the inhaler.  (They just think it's treat time--purees, yum!)

They're still big cuddles, but their kitten still comes out to play.  They're big fans of interactive toys.  I tried to buy a robotic flopping fish, but kept getting duds.  It did, however, come with a long fishing line with a feather on the end.  I can get them both airborne chasing it, and it's long enough o can play with both at once.  They also have a "pop and play" where a feather randomly pops out of holes to chase. I have to watch them though; they managed to eat the feather in the first hour.

Midi's favorite toy is still a spring.  She heroically defends me from the machinations of the insidious green spring on a regular basis.   Domi likes small, lightweight things he can bat around and chase.

Both still really like scratching.  I have multiple posts that I'm going to need to recover soon.  They're pretty good about using them, but they also like my chair...too bad I'm gone for most of the day.

They're so cute it's hard to stay mad, though.
